Updates from MainstreamBIO’s last events in Netherlands
On June 4th, 2025, MainstreamBIO actively organized two significant events held by Wageningen Research at Lelystad, The Netherlands. These complementary activities – the Akkerbouwdag (Arable Farming Day) and the MainstreamBIO Networking Excursion – offered invaluable opportunities for interaction, learning, and showcasing innovations in sustainable agriculture and bio-based economy.
The Akkerbouwdag attracted over 1,200 visitors, including farmers, researchers, students, and industry stakeholders interested in the latest advances in soil-saving cultivation, climate-proof farming, and agri-technology. MainstreamBIO contributed through specially organized farm tours for three groups of agricultural students and their teachers, where key bio-based economy examples were presented. Discussions during these tours covered digestion economics, crop production for biobased materials, grass fibre utilization, and algae production on agricultural side streams. The tours sparked lively exchanges between students and experts, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges in scaling bio-based innovations.
Simultaneously, a dedicated MainstreamBIO networking excursion engaged around 50 participants, ranging from farmers and producers to academics and entrepreneurs. Attendees visited pilot installations demonstrating digestion technologies, renewable energy production, algae cultivation, and biobased building materials made from biomass. Rich discussions focused on accelerating innovation adoption, addressing political uncertainties, and leveraging renewable resources effectively. The event was well received, fostering new connections and a shared commitment to advancing the bioeconomy.
Both events underlined the vibrant interest and growing momentum around bio-based solutions in agriculture. MainstreamBIO’s presence in Lelystad marked the completion of MainstreamBIO’s events and highlighted the importance of collaboration between research, industry, and education to accelerate the transition toward sustainable rural economies.
