MainstreamBIO’s High-Level Policy Roundtable in Brussels Shapes the Future of EU Bioeconomy
On May 14th, 2025, MainstreamBIO held its Policy Roundtable in Brussels, as part of the broader European Rural Circular Bioeconomy Conference (EuRCBC). The event gathered distinguished experts and policy representatives from the European Commission and beyond, setting the stage for impactful dialogue on the integration of small-scale bio-based solutions across rural Europe.
The session focused on refining the joint policy briefs developed through shared research and field experience across the consortium. Moderated by Prof. Stelios Rozakis, the discussion was structured around four critical pillars:
- Promoting education, capacity building, and knowledge sharing in rural bioeconom
- Supporting primary producers and enhancing biomass mobilisation in regional value chains
- Strengthening coherence between the EU Bioeconomy Strategy and broader sustainability goals
- Unlocking economic incentives and financial instruments to scale-up bio-based products

Panelists emphasized the importance of regionally tailored policies, improved access to funding for rural innovators, harmonized regulations across EU regions, and more inclusive approaches to farmer engagement. Notably, the discussion highlighted the need to strengthen local networks, simplify funding mechanisms, and bring education and capacity-building directly to rural communities.
The insights gathered will inform the final version of the Joint Policy Briefs, currently being revised. These briefs aim to influence upcoming EU consultations on the future bioeconomy strategy and bring grassroots innovations closer to mainstream policy and practice.
