MainstreamBIO’s Workshop in Cork Unites Stakeholders to Drive Bio-Based Solutions for the Future
On 18th of October 2024, MainstreamBIO successfully hosted a workshop in Cork, titled “Smart Farming and Bioeconomy: Shaping Tomorrow’s Agriculture.” The event brought together more than 40 participants, representing a diverse group of stakeholders mainly from the farming industry, academia, and local cooperatives, to explore bio-based solutions for the future of agriculture. The workshop was held in collaboration with two additional Interreg projects: ReNu2Cycle and SIMONE, highlighting the collective effort to foster bio-based technologies and sustainable agricultural practices across regions.
The workshop opened with discussions on nutrient recycling solutions and anaerobic digestion (AD) technology, with a strong focus on the importance of collaboration between farmers, industry representatives, and research institutions. Presentations from Niamh Power, Dragica Grozdanic, and the MAP member Dinny Gavin (Aglish case) set the tone, emphasizing the potential for integrating nutrient recycling and AD systems into local agricultural practices.
A notable part of the workshop was the use of the Smart Farming and Bioeconomy Canvas, which helped participants map out and evaluate the supply chain, benefits, concerns, costs, and convenience of bio-based practices. This allowed for an in-depth analysis of Agri-food resources and Urban Green Waste, with participants identifying both opportunities and challenges in scaling bio-based solutions.
Participants engaged in a co-creation session using Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping, where they explored key sustainability pathways. This included discussions on reusing agricultural and urban green waste and promoting anaerobic digestors as viable bio-based solutions. Divided into groups, participants discussed the regulatory and financial challenges that bio-based developments faces, including the need for access to grants and overcoming the cost barriers associated with new technologies.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of involvement of local community and cooperation with co-ops in scaling these sustainable agricultural practices. Several participants emphasized the economic and environmental benefits of utilizing different types of waste/residues, underscoring their potential to drive the financial sustainability of bio-based solutions.
