Exploring Bio-Based Opportunities in Lelystad
On November 12th, the Dutch Mutual Learning Workshop, organized by Wageningen University & Research, took place in Lelystad as part of our series of Mutual Lerning Workshops. This event brought together stakeholders from various sectors to exchange knowledge and explore the latest advancements in bio-based solutions and sustainable practices.
The workshop began with an introductory session where participants shared their backgrounds and interests, setting the tone for a collaborative and engaging atmosphere.
The first presentation, explored MainstreamBIO’s mission, highlighting its purpose, solutions, and significant findings. The presentation shed light on regional needs, value chains, and framework conditions while also addressing enablers and barriers to advancing the bioeconomy in both the Netherlands and Ireland.
Aleksandra Augustyniak from Munster Technological University, presented insights into the Bio4Africa Project. The session presented all innovative pilot cases across Uganda, Ghana, Senegal, and Ivory Coast, focusing on utilizing plant residues like alfalfa and pakchong to extract high-value ingredients. Participants engaged in discussions about the challenges of implementing bioprocessing in rural Africa, particularly the availability of infrastructure.
The event concluded with a visit to several pilot installations. These discussions revolved around algae production from sidestreams and grass valorization, emphasizing the potential of bio-based solutions in driving sustainability and circular economy practices.
