Opportunities and Challenges in Northern Sweden
On November 12th, 2024, RISE successfully hosted the Swedish mutual learning workshop at the RISE Processum facilities. This event brought together 16 participants, including two representatives from the BIOMODEL4REGIONS EU-funded project, to explore the opportunities and challenges faced by SMEs in northern Sweden’s bioeconomy.
Opportunities for SMEs in Northern Sweden
Abundant Resources | Northern Sweden boasts a wealth of natural resources, including bio
mass and green energy.
Social Interest in Innovation | A strong willingness to embrace and support innovative bio-based solutions among local communities.
Surplus of Electricity | The combination of green energy and biomass offers significant potential for scalable bio-based production.
Challenges for SMEs in Northern Sweden
Logistical Complexity | Collecting and transporting resources in a vast and sparsely populated area poses logistical hurdles.
Funding and Scaling Up | Securing financial support and transitioning from small-scale to larger-scale production remain significant barriers.
Tradition vs. Innovation | Encouraging a shift from traditional practices to innovative bio-based solutions requires both awareness and technical know-how.
After lunch, participants visited Cinis Fertilizer, a Swedish green-tech company pioneering sustainable practices in mineral fertilizer production. Cinis Fertilizer recycles industrial waste products from battery manufacturing, recycling, the pulp industry, and other sectors to produce environmentally friendly potassium sulfate (SOP). This innovative approach exemplifies the potential of integrating circular solutions into industrial processes, making the visit an inspiring highlight of the day.
The workshop provided a platform for constructive dialogue, emphasizing the need for robust funding mechanisms, accessible feedstock, and collaborations to overcome logistical challenges.
