Model2bio & MainstreamBIO partner up to boost innovative biobased solutions
It is with great pleasure we announce our new collaboration with Model2Bio, a vital initiative to overcome organic waste. The Model2Bio project aims to develop a Decision-Support Tool based on mathematical models, to predict the physical-chemical characteristics of agri-food residuals streams and identify the best routes for valorising them. The project combines the expertise of think-tanks, research centres, technology developers, universities, SMEs and bioeconomy clusters to tackle waste management through a holistic approach (technical, economic, environmental, and social) to find an environmentally- friendly and sustainable solution.
The Model2Bio Tool combines several technologies including the Simulation Module, the LCA Module and the Optimisation Algorithm to seek out the best routes for managing agri-food industry waste. Each technology adds a specific feature from predicting the physical-chemical characteristics of agri-food residuals streams, their environmental and social impact but also alternative solutions to reuse these residues as a raw material in bio-industries.

Unlike existing commercial programs for modelling, Model2Bio intends to simulate the entire value chain and process of the agrifood sectors. A first level of validation in 4 real-life environments (ES, NL, BE, GR) will take place for the software platform with a multidisciplinary team present in each territory, called the Model2Bio Validation Club. This club will provide operational and logistics information to feed the tool, define scenarios to be verified, evaluate results, and propose improvements or new scenarios.
With a huge economic and environmental impact, valorising the agrifood waste could transform 30% of the residual streams into resources for other bio-industries and reduce by 20% our carbon footprint to name a few examples.
